Smith&Wesson model of 91
Description: Up for review is an interesting fairly rare nearly mint Smith & Wesson revolver produced around 1900. It is an excellent example of the early single action revolvers produced by this company. Three models of the gun were initially made, the first two included a large number of the common single shot and spur trigger models that appear on the tables at many gun shows. Quite a few of the second models went into the Mexican market as they were favored by many folks in that country. These were so sought after that Smith actually made a "trigger spur kit" when the third model began to be produced with a trigger guard so this model could be converted back into a spur model. The third model came into being in 1891 and it continued to be produced until 1911. It was called the model of 91. For what ever reason, and quite a few have been postulated, an original nickel plated high condition example of this model is hard to come by even though some 28,000 of both blued and nickeled guns were originally produced. This one I doubt has ever been fired and its nickel plating remains in about 99 percent condition. The pearl grips are flawless with pesistent luster and the slightly tarnished S&W circlular original emblem is present on the upper sides of both grips. The case hardened trigger guard and hammer retain their excellent original appearance. The bore and all five cylinders are crystal clean much as they must have been when they came from the factory. Matching serial numbers appear on the barrel latch, cylinder and butt stock. The action is smooth and the trigger lets off with no creep at a consistent 4 1/2 pounds. In summary it would be difficult to find a better condition one of these model guns regardless of how long you might look. It would even be hard to discover one in only fair condiion at the big gun shows that are occuring today. I suspect the nice ones that are still around reside in the safes of ardent S&W collectors. I've included some photos to help support my contention regarding this little pistol but any questions that might remain I'll try and answer through the G.I.site or on the telephone. Always remember condition and rarity dictate the value of any antique piece and not the blue book. Thanks for taking a look.
