A musket very similar to this example is pictured and discussed in American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume I: Colonial and Revolutionary War Arms by George Moller on pages 385-395. He lists it as a Dutch Type II musket and indicates it is probable that this musket was part of the 18,000 muskets purchased by Great Britain in Holland in 1741. He noted previously that some of these muskets may have been shipped to the American colonies during the French & Indian War. Thus, this musket may have seen use in the French & Indian War and American Revolution as well as subsequent conflicts. Dutch flintlock muskets were imported into the American colonies starting in the early 18th century and are documented as used by the Patriots during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin aided Massachusetts with the purchase of thousands of Dutch muskets. During the early years of the British Colonies in America, there was little manufacturing capability available domestically, so items such as firearms, swords, and so forth were imported. Much came from England, but other European countries, such as the Netherlands, were also happy to supply the new and expanding market. During the French and Indian War, and even in the later American Revolutionary War, many of weapons used were of European manufacture. The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The markings on the lock are faint but visible and appear to read “Cason” and “UTRECHT” (this one of the most populous cities in the Netherlands). The action is strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock shows use and has a bit of soldier graffiti on the butt stock. There is a joint under the small brass band where the forestock was replaced; this was well-done and the wood matches quite well. A fantastic piece of Dutch and American history! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 46 inches. Caliber: .80 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
