SANDERS SELFACTING PISTOL LEICESTER Antique English PEPPERBOX Revolver .36

BRITISH Double Action BAR HAMMER with ACCESSORIES

Here we present an antique Cased & Engraved Sanders British Proofed Bar Hammer 6-shot Double Action Pepperbox Pistol made circa the 1850s in Leicester, England.  This example is much like the Allen & Thurber and Allen & Wheelock pepperbox revolvers being made in Worcester, Massachusetts during the same time period. Percussion nipples were integrated to the barrels. Made with a bar hammer and standard trigger, models have been encountered with or without an integral nipple shield. While simplifying shooting (no manual cocking of the hammer), the bar hammer did preclude the inclusion of usable sights. However, this early example of a double-action pistol must have been quite a selling point. As these were considered “point and shoot” short range defensive weapons or “belly guns”, the market did not seem to object to the limitation of not having sights.

Made circa the mid-1850s, these pistols enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s first pistol. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American, and with this example, British history.

The overall condition is near fine. Original blue finish. The action is strong. Barrel cluster indexing is somewhat intermittent. The bores are smooth and dim. Grips show use and remain solid; some stable splits on the back of the left panel. The case is in very good condition.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 3 inches.

Caliber: .36 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
