Description:
Exquisite 19th Century Antique Percussion Target Rifle by Henry Simon
Up for sale and just acquired is this superb craftsmanship of the 19th century-an example of fine craftsmanship from a golden era of precision shooting and gunmaking made by  Henry Simon.  While not as widely documented as giants like Whitworth or Remington, regional gunsmiths like Simon often produced highly customized, sometimes one-off pieces. Simon may have been a niche or regional maker, likely European or American, catering to competitive marksmen or affluent enthusiasts. Overall length of 48 inches, it has a 30-inch octagonal with a crafted false muzzle – indicative of a high-grade target rifle. The false muzzle is a precision aid, used to ensure consistent bullet seating and protect rifling from wear during loading. Approximately .40–.45 caliber range given typical target loads of the period, it has sharp rifleing of its heavy target barrel. The deep rifling suggests the bore is in excellent condition – ideal for a shooter or collector who appreciates functionality as well as form.
Fine features such as set trigger is a hallmark of high-end 19th-century target rifles, allowing for extremely light trigger pulls to minimize movement during firing. Its standard iron sightsare complimented by a fine adjustable rear sight marked "Allen’s Patent 1872" – this would refer to a precision tang or globe sight, possibly made by Ethan Allen or a similarly notable inventor of sighting systems. These patent-marked sights are collectible on their own right and the evidence of such would lead us to believe this being an all-Americab manufacture.
Another beautiful feature is the rifle’s Schützen style buttplate and Cheekrest: Indicates the rifle is influenced by or intended for Germanic-style target shooting—Schützenvereins were popular shooting clubs in both Europe and the U.S., emphasizing highly accurate offhand shooting. The buttplate often features deep curves for shoulder stabilization. Decorative scrollwork on lockplate—a sign of apresentation-level piece. Checkered wrist adds both grip and aesthetic appeal—another sign of craftsmanship. The rifle has a very old hairline crack top of comb of buttstock- a fairly common age-related defect which we feel does not attract from overall beauty of piece. This could be due to environmental exposure over time. It still appears very solid. A piece which has strong collector value, especially with the Allen-patent sight and original condition.
