Description:
PENNSYLVANIA Antique LONG RIFLE .36 BIRD & BROTHERS Philadelphia PA

With Large Brass Patchbox, Double Set Triggers, Octagonal Barrel

Here we present an antique Bird & Brothers Philadelphia Long Rifle, made circa 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bird & Brothers were hardware merchants in Philadelphia circa 1833 through 1837. This one has a long octagonal barrel in .36 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Full-length stock with a large brass patchbox that has a pineapple finial. Double set triggers.

Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many makers’ names of the so-called Kentucky long rifles have been lost over time.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent and must be used with the set trigger. The bore has sharp rifling. The stock is solid; there is a split along the grain that crosses the cheek rest on the left side of the butt stock—this is solid and immobile.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 43-3/8 inches.

Caliber: .36 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
