Superb Classic S&W Early Chief’s Special .38 Revolver UNFIRED
Offered here for sale is a newly acquired classic Smith & Wesson revolver just obtained from a prestigious firearms collection is this truly pristine example of an early Smith & Wesson Model 36 “Chief’s Special” revolver. This specimen is all original with a 2 inch barrel length, J-frame, double-action/single-action. Blued with color case-hardened hammer and trigger. Original S&W medallion walnut grips. Unfired, with just a hint of a cylinder turn line this specimen is just about New-In-Box.
The Model 36 was introduced in 1950 at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) convention — hence the nickname “Chief’s Special.” It was built as a compact, concealable revolver chambered in .38 Special, specifically to replace earlier I-frame revolvers like the Terrier. It became an instant classic, and still remains in production in various forms today. This serial number places the revolver in the late 1950s to early 1960s range. That’s still pre-Model Marking Era (before 1957), but the serial number aligns closely with very early production of the post-naming convention Model 36s.
Given its unfired condition, factory-original grips, brilliant bluing and vibrant case colors and almost no cylinder line, with matching original factory paperwork this revolver is not just a fine collector’s piece, but an investment-grade firearm.
