The volunteer/yeomanry units were military forces raised and paid for by the local duke/baron/viscount/earl/etc. These units were common during the first part of the 19th century. The 39"" round 75 caliber barrel has a good bore with some roughness. It has Birmingham proofs. The metal has a smooth brown patina with a little roughness around the touchhole. The lock is marked RAMSEY/SUTHERLAND at the center and LONDON at the tail. Ramsey Sutherland operated at 1 Caroline St., Birmingham, from 1829 to 1839. The lock and hammer have a smooth brown patina. The stock is very good with no chips or cracks with the exception of a small chip next to the hammer. It is marked J.H on the left flat. It also has three sets of very small initials stamped at the rear of the triggerguard tang. The brass furniture are fine with the appropriate age/wear patina. The buttplate tang is stamped 15. The swivels and a replacement ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. This is a very nice example of a British volunteer/yeomanry Brown Bess musket. Price: $3,850.00 Antique: Yes |
