This Purdey is serial number 7946 and is the No. 2 gun of a pair. Thumbhole lever opening allows the action to be opened when the right hammer is cocked. Made 1869 -70 this island lock hammergun has rebounding hammers and a grip safety. Presented in its oak and leather case with maker’s label, charge card, and accessories including Purdey oil bottle, mahogany cleaning rod, and leather hand guard. Recently completely restored in the UK this Purdey hammergun is in great condition. Weighs 6lb 10oz. Special Note: The barrels were regulated by Ken Eyster for pattern consistency. The 29-1/4” nitro Damascus barrels are nicely figured were reproofed for 2-3/4” cartridges in London in 2001. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib which is inscribed “J. Purdey 314-1/2 Oxford Street London”. The right barrel is bored 0.743 with a constriction 0.009 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.021. The left barrel is bored 0.745 and has a constriction of 0.011 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.022. The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of figured European walnut with crisp checkering, satin oil finish, and a fairly new leather recoil pad. There are some minor handling marks on the stock. Stock dimensions are 15” by 1-9/16” by 2-3/8”. Cast off for the righthand shot. There are some scuff marks on the left lockplate.
