Description:
RARE Antique Joshua & Charles BARSTOW U.S. M1808 FLINTLOCK Musket w/BAYONET
1 of 2,375; WAR OF 1812 Muskets NEW HAMPSHIRE Made
Here we present a scarce antique Joshua & Charles Barstow U.S. Model 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket, made in 1808 in Exeter, New Hampshire. Joshua and Charles Barstow of Exeter, New Hampshire, were contracted for 2,500 muskets in the 1808 contract, approximately 2,375 of which are believed to have been delivered. It follows the standard Springfield pattern with "EXETER/J&C.B" marked on the lock behind the cock and an eagle and oval "U.S." mark in front. The barrel is marked with a script "US" as well as an "eagle/CT" proof indicating it was built under contract.
Europe was embroiled in the Napoleonic Wars and the young United States was sorely unprepared for any major military action, so Congress moved to equip state militias in 1808. About 85,200 “Model 1808” Muskets were produced by a total of 19 different contractors and delivered to the state militias. This move proved to be none too soon as the War of 1812 brought part of the European conflict to the shores of the young United States. Many of these flintlock muskets were later updated to the percussion firing system, as was this example before being reconverted back to flintlock, for use during the American Civil War.
The overall condition is very good. Even gray patina throughout. The action is excellent. Very nice reconversion to flintlock. The bore is smooth and somewhat reflective of light. The stock is solid, showing use. A great piece of American history!
