Description:
24 inch octagon barrel chambered in 44 RF caliber with a good bore that shows shine and very fine scattered pits. Sights include a blade front and a replaced folding ladder rear. Barrel and magazine tube are a plum/brown patina. Brass receiver and crescent rifle style buttplate are nice aged patina. Lever is about the same plum/brown as the barrel. This Henry was made in February of 1865 near the tail end of the Civil War. Left sideplate of the receiver is period inscribed "Frank W. Meese / KANE / Pa". The rifle's inscription and serial number are listed on page 83 of Wiley Sword's book "The Historic Henry Rifle". You may enjoy researching Frank Meese from the Civil War. There is a filled dovetail on top of the receiver. Rifle has also been converted to centerfire. Upper tang appears to have been repaired long ago and has filled holes. Walnut stock is also a replacement and is a little ill fitting but does not look too bad. Action works fine. An interesting Civil War Henry rifle with some history.
