In 1835, renowned gun maker and inventor Casimir Lefaucheux patented one of the first self-contained firearm cartridges. This early design featured a case containing a ball, powder, and primer, distinguished by a firing pin projecting from the side of the case, which, when struck, detonated the primer. His son, Eugene Lefaucheux, further developed this concept into a revolver designed to utilize this cartridge. The revolver's flat hammer struck the cylinder's side, activating the cartridge's pin. This design gained prominence across Europe in the 19th century, adopted by military, civilian, and law enforcement users, and was even marketed during the American Civil War, spawning numerous licensed and unlicensed copies. These compact self-defense pistols were particularly favored in bustling cities such as Liège, London, and Paris during the mid-1800s. Prior to the introduction of the Deringer, these firearms were referred to as “Gentleman's” or “Muff Pistols,” noted for their ease of concealment. They were especially popular among the gentry and women, who would carry them discreetly in waistcoat pockets or hand muffs. The overall condition is very good. Strong action all around. The trigger hinge lacks tension. The bore has most of its shimmer and visible rifling, dimming toward the muzzle. Well-defined floral engravings and gold inlays adorn the barrel, backstrap, frame and cylinder. Oth grips are in very good shape with light handling. Smooth dark gray patina over most of the iron parts. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-3/8 inches.
