In the late 19th and early 20th century. The Velodog, also known as a “Revolver de Poche, was a French design by Charles-François Galand specifically made for carry by cyclists to defend themselves against dogs. In fact, the name “Velodog” combines the word “Velocipede” with “Dog”, which is quite interesting. It was copied & produced all over Europe into the beginning of the 20th Century. It features a small size, a smooth external hammer, gold inlay, and folding trigger. Another feature on many models of Velo-Dogs is the lack of a trigger guard, and a trigger that folds into the body of the weapon when not in use. For the more humane, there were cartridges loaded with cayenne pepper or dust, or which had bullets made from wax, wood or cork. This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of Liege, London, or Paris during the tumultuous times of the late 1800s to early 1900s. These types of pistols are small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff. The overall condition is Excellent. Robust action. Bright, strongly rifled bore.
