About Us: I am a private collector of antique and C&R military long guns and handguns. Occasionally I add to the collection and have a firearm to sell.

Description:
I am offering for sale a Turkish Model 1938 Mauser Kirikkale military rifle, produced in 1945 to chamber for 8mm Mauser, with a bayonet.

Following the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, which were disastrous for Turkey, at the outbreak of World War I in 1914 the Ottoman Empire was initially neutral. However, in October 1914, it joined the war with the Central Powers. The main rifle for Turkish infantry was the German Mauser M1903, a version of the Gewehr 98 long rifle with an intermediate-length action, shorter than that of the Gew.98, based on the 7.65x53mm Belgian cartridge.

Following the end of WWI and the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in 1922, the new Republic of Turkey was established by the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923.  In the early 1930s, as part of reforms by Atatürk, a program was begun to modify the inventoried rifles chambered in 7.65mm to support the 7.92x57mm Spitzer cartridge (8mm Mauser).  The arsenal conversion work was done at Kirikkale Tufek Fabrikasi (Kirikkale Rifle Factory) near Ankara, with machinery supplied by Fritz Werner GmbH, Germany.  A key change of rework was milling a notch in the front receiver ring to accept the longer Spitzer cartridge.  The modified Model 1903 was referred to as Model 1903/38.  Around 1938 production began of M1938 barreled receivers designed for the Spitzer cartridge without a notched front ring.  These M1938 rifles were stamped with “K.Kale” on the receiver and assembled with new stock and often with old Gewehr.98 parts in inventory.  Production of M1938 rifles continued through World War II.

This M1938 has the correct pistol-grip stock, narrow grooved center barrel band, bayonet stud on bottom of forend band, full length clearing/cleaning rod, steel buttplate and an internal 5-round charger loaded magazine.  The buttstock has a bolt take-down ring with a brass insert to minimize damage to the firing pin during bolt disassembly, a Turkish modification also found on some “38” conversions.  Tangent ramp rear sight with Western numerals and no Osmanli markings as found on M1903/38 rifles.  Fixed blade front sight on barrel stud.  On receiver are stamped "T.C." - Turkiye Cumhuriyeti (Republic of Turkey), "AS FA" - Ankara Silah Fabrikasi Atolyeleri (Ankara Arsenal Factory Workshop), “ANKARA”, "K. Kale" and  “1945” production date.  “Crescent and star” national symbols are military acceptance marks.  Circular cartouche on bottom of pistol grip is "B/ATF" - Ankara Tufek Fabrikasi.  This rifle is stocked with native Turkish walnut, which has an orange color without a shiny oil finish.  Serial numbers on receiver and rear sight match "210737"; different numbers on bolt and magazine floor plate.  Turkish bayonet with wood grips, 9-inch blade, and “AS FA” stamped on pommel and “49939” on guard.

This rifle is in very good collector condition, with all parts in working order, metal markings and wood stamp are crisp and clear, bore is clean and reflective, intact blued finish on metal, and natural finish on restocked native wood.  I have not shot the rifle, but the action chambers and extracts/ejects a cartridge.   Overall length of rifle is 49 inches; barrel length is 29 inches.  A discrete US import mark on the barrel near muzzle.  A handsome military rifle with a storied history in the wake of World War I.
