This Lefever HE Grade 12 Gauge, manufactured circa 1900, represents the craftsmanship and innovation of the Lefever Arms Company, one of America’s most revered shotgun makers. Founded by Daniel Myron Lefever, often referred to as the “Father of the Hammerless Shotgun,” the company produced high-quality sidelock and boxlock shotguns that set the standard for smooth operation and fine craftsmanship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The HE Grade was a well-regarded mid-tier offering in Lefever’s lineup, built with finely fitted Damascus barrels and the company’s signature ball-and-socket hinge joint, which allowed for exceptional durability and smooth break-action operation. The 2-1/2” chambered barrels measure 31-5/8 inches and feature fixed improved cylinder chokes, making this an excellent choice for vintage side-by-side enthusiasts who appreciate the artistry and balance of a fine American double gun.
This particular example has a known history of professional care, having visited Turnbull Restoration’s gunsmiths for expert repair and refurbishment. Work in 2011 included a barrel set-back, trigger adjustments, and forend restoration with fresh checkering and refinishing. In 2021, additional work was completed to ensure proper function, including reshaping the trigger top lugs for smooth safety operation and barrel shortening to remove a crack in the right-hand tube.
