American Civil War Era (1863–1865)
Only 1,070 Units Produced
Manufactured from 1863 to 1865. Dual ignition six-shot cylinder; combination percussion 31 caliber with removable nipples to convert to 32 rimfire. This revolver retains all 6 nipples. The top barrel is marked "J. REID N.Y. CITY/PATD. APL. 28. 1863.", the serial number 3102 is marked on the butt . The Model 4 features include the requirement of a wrench to loosen barrel and partially unscrew to remove cylinder, loading lever under the barrel and exposed barrel threads between front of cylinder and frame. Loading gate on the right side of the frame has a small button to be pushed down for the gate to swivel upward. Blue barrel and cylinder, frame, casehardened loading gate , hammer and rosewood grips.
Caliber:
.32 Rimfire Metallic Cartridge
.31 Caliber Percussion Round Ball
- Dual Ignition System:
The James Reid Model 4 was one of the few firearms of its time to feature a dual ignition mechanism, allowing it to fire both .31 caliber percussion round balls and .32 rimfire metallic cartridges. This made it a versatile weapon, particularly in the field during the Civil War.
- Revolver Type:
A single-action revolver with a revolving cylinder capable of holding 6 rounds. The design made it compact, reliable, and easy to handle in close combat.
- Dual Cartridge Compatibility:
The versatility of accepting both percussion caps and rimfire cartridges allowed soldiers or civilians to use different types of ammunition depending on availability.
Historical Significance:
- The James Reid Model 4 was primarily used during the American Civil War, although it was also seen post-war, especially by individuals in areas where modern ammunition was scarce.
- Due to the limited production (only 1,070 units), the Model 4 is a rare and highly sought-after collector's piece today.
- The revolver was notable for its use by both Union and Confederate soldiers, though it was more commonly found in civilian hands as a self-defense weapon due to its ease of use with both types of ammunition.
Condition & Rarity:
- Condition: 3 ½” octagon barrel with a good bore still showing strong rifling. The metal surfaces which were once in the blue have now turned to a nice looking plum type antique patina. The metal is in very good condition with the usual handling and wear marks for a revolver of this age. The Rosewood grips are in excellent condition with just minor handling marks. Mechanically works excellent with very good timing , no cylinder play at lock-up. Hammer holds in half and full-cock positions with a nice strong hammer spring. This revolver is 160 years old so I have not fired it or have I tried to remove any the 6 nipples.
- The current condition of the item listed has been described to the best of my ability . Please examine the photos , text thoroughly and make sure to ask any and all questions
- This revolver comes with a lockable , glass top , custom presentation case which includes a blackpowder flask , bullet mold , .31 cal round balls in a metal container, barrel grease, and some percussion caps.
- Rarity: With only 1,070 units produced, the James Reid Model 4 is considered extremely rare and holds significant value in Civil War-era firearm collections. I have seen these go at action years ago in the $2500- $4000 range
