Modeled on the GEWEHR 98 Rifle Genre w/SLING
Here we present a German Mauser KK-Wehrsportgewehr Single Shot Training Rifle in .22 LR, made circa 1939 in Oberndorf, Germany. The infamous Wehrmacht training rifle was built in direct contradiction to the Treaty of Versailles to which Germany had signed. The all-encompassing title DSM-34, which was the predecessor to the KK-Wehrsportgewehr, was even designed to throw the allied signatories of the treaty off the trail. It is translated as “German Sports Model 1934”. Germany was forbidden to train and equip a modern army after the First World War and that meant using full bore military rifles. To get around this they developed what we have here, which is a small bore version of the rifle Germany would rearm with, the K98k. Everything about this “Sporting Rifle” mimics its bigger brother. Germany was also forbidden from building repeating rifles, which they could not get round, so this is a single shot weapon.
The DSM-34, or Deutsches SportModell, was introduced in 1934 and became one of the most common of the German "training" rifles leading into World War II. Modeled after the K98, this training rifle has an inverted “V” front sight and a tangent rear sight graduated from 25 to 200. The top of the barrel was marked “Deutches Sportmodell”.
Mauser was one of many companies sub-contracting for the production of these allegedly sporting rifles. The German Government after the First World War was officially restricted to the production of only sporting arms, as military weapon manufacture was more or less forbidden by the Allies. Some years on, the sporting rifles came to bear more than a passing resemblance to the old German service rifles. This new miniature caliber Mauser rifle became known as the DSM-34, by virtue of the " Deutsche Sportmodell" designation and the 1934 year of introduction. The DSM became one of the most common of the German "training" rifles, and as was the 1939 following design KKW rifle (Klein Kaliber - Wehrsportgewehr), as is this example, was modeled loosely upon the Gewehr 98 rifle genre. The DSM could not be fixed with a bayonet, but the immediately pre-World War II design KKW was so enabled.
The overall condition is nearing fine. Original finish. The metal surfaces exhibit a blend of rich brown and soft gray patina, adorned with scattered shallow pitting. Bright, rifled bore. The stock presents average dents, scuffs, and stains. Mechanically, this piece is in very good condition, operating smoothly and reliably. Bolt and receiver numbers match. Markings are legible.
