My interests are Winchester rifles in models 1892 and 1894 especially with shorter than standard barrels. I have also written four books on Newton rifles and have interest in all models of those rifles. newtonrifles Description: This is a very early (late 1916 or early 1917) production Newton Model 1916 rifle in caliber .256 Newton. It has the early production features including the bolt handle knurled in top and bottom. The rifle has matching serial numbers (249) in 10 places. It has an excellent bore and NO cracks in the stock. The interesting feature of this rifle is that it has a square cut rifled barrel. When Newton began to promote his caliber in 1914 it was before he worked with Harry Pope to develop the segmentally rifled barrel. He ordered some number of barrels in .256 Newton caliber from Marlin and used them to create the Springfield Newton and the Model D Haenel rifles. There are two opinions of how some of the early Model 1916s were barreled with this barrel. Newton may have run out of segmental barrels to fill the early demand. I have a letter in which he asked Harry Pope to come back to the factory to continue to oversee barrel production. Another theory is that the customer could request a square cut rifled barrel. This rifle is in very good condition overall. The wood is clean and any marks should be able to be seen in the pictures including a slight mark on the tip of the forearm. The metal bluing is about 95% with some wear on some edges. The smudges appearing in the pictures is due to oil not being even. The butt plate has some wear at the heal and toe. This is a very nice original Model 1916 with the early production variations and the not commonly seen Marlin made barrel. These barrels have the triple zero on each side of the barrel address and the rear sight covers part of the address because when they were made, they were not marked to coincide with the location of the rear sight. (The first one I saw years ago I turned down because of the rear sight covering the address) Packing, shipping and insurance are $75 Price: $1,500.00 Curio/Relic: Yes Rifle Caliber: .256 Newton Manufacturer: Newton Model: 1916 Serial Number: 249 Barrel Length: 24 Condition: VG Metal Condition: VG Wood Condition: VG Bore Condition: Very Good Triggers: Double Set Manufacture Date: 1916-1917 |
