A total of 40,000 Contract Model 1861 rifle-muskets were delivered by Remington during the closing years of the Civil War. This contract began in 1864 and even though produced under the Regulation 1861, the model 1863 improvements were implemented from the beginning. The lockplate is dated 1865 behind the hammer and features the “Federal Eagle” over “U.S.” ahead of the hammer. It has “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.’ below the unique bolster. This Remington Model 1863 would have been comparable to the Springfield Model 1861 which was “everyman’s” rifle during the war. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. Markings are legible. The stock is in good shape containing some chips and cracks, all are stable and do not interfere with function. “1865” dated lock. “F. SCHMITT” marked comb. Own the original!
