With Factory Letter AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT OUR ON-LINE STORE Manufactured in 1898. Of the 976 Bisley Target Model revolvers made, only six were made in .38-44 S&W caliber. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line address and the left side "(BISLEY MODEL) FOR 38-44 S&W CTG.". The left side of the frame is marked with the two line, three patent dates followed by the circled Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading gate is marked with the assembly number "62". The front sight is a removable brass blade adjustable for elevation and the rear sight is "v" notch dovetailed on the top strap. All blue finish with casehardened hammer and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the top. Included Colt historical letter indicates firearm was shipped to the Spalding-Haywood Arms Company (supposedly located in Denver, CO.) in 1898. In the late 1890s, with increasing urbanization in the Western United States, suggests the possibility that many of these pistols were used as companion pieces to lever-action rifles of the same period. The unique features of the Bisley with their low-slung hammer, less humped backstrap, and shorter barrel may have suited the city-dwelling suit-coat-wearing clientele who still found themselves outdoors, not only on horses but in buggies and automobiles. The need for man-stopping bullets was decreasing in urbanized environments, although in semi-urban areas, a pistol like the Bisley would be suitable for discouraging both four-legged and two-legged "varmints" while also suitable for collecting supper along the road. The Bisley may mark a movement to a more civilized West. Colt Single Action Collectors! This One's For YOU! SPECIFICATIONS
