Description:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are real proud to offer this fine example of Arthur Savage's first production rifle, the 1895. This gun has a rich history, as it was designed by Savage, developed by Colt, and actually made by Marlin. Production was limited to just 8000 units, all made in 1895 and 1896, and all chambered in .303 Savage. This one, number 5703, was made in the year of our Lord 1896, according to the fine folks at the Cody Museum. She is in wonderful condition for being 129 years old. The blue is deep, with some thinning on edges, and at the muzzle. The bolt is gleaming, and the entire action is very clean. The cartridge counter and cocking indicator are clear and bright, and the lever is smooth and tight. The walnut has a rich, dark finish, and has only light handling marks. The forend is fitted with a Schnabel tip, with an ebony insert. We have never seen these features on any other '95, save for the sky high engraved versions. The critical area behind the receiver is devoid of the usual Savage cracks, as well. The crescent butt plate is a bit mottled, but smooth and complete. The serial number, or parts of it, is repeated on the stock, butt plate, and barrel, which also bears the JM stamp. The bore of the 26 inch octagonal barrel is also good, with plenty of shine and strong rifling. The icing on the cake is the Lyman combination peep sight, with 2 apertures and fine adjustments. These early Savage rifles don't surface very often, and they are an important link for the 1899 collector. If you have been looking for the right Savage 1895 to collect, or for investment, then look no further.
