RARE!!!! THE REAL DEAL - COLT .22-45 SERVICE MODEL CONVERSION UNIT.
The pictures say it all. This is one (1) of 2670 units made by Colt between 1938-1946. This unit contains the floating chamber designed by convict "Machine Gun" Williams and the patent sold to Colt. The floating chamber made the .22 recoil similar to the 45, most likely the reason for the interest by the U.S. Marine Corps. COLT FACTORY LETTER ON ORDER AND WILL ACCOMPANY SALE. This very rare Service Model Conversion Unit Serial number U1556 was manufactured in 1942 per the Colt Serial Number site. All serial numbers match, are clearly stamped in the correct places. The serial number falls within the range of at least 80 produced which were sold to the U S Marine Corps in 1942 but it can only be made certain with the Colt archives letter on order which has a 150 day turn around. This could also explain the box showing two serial numbers. Please see the photos. 1942 - a significant year; the year Colonel Doolittle made their daring mission after Pearl Harbor. A similar unit with serial number U1318 is shown with providence on OLDCOLTCOM for comparison to the one described here. The Colt serial number U1318 displayed there was manufactured in 1940.
Per verbatim Colt Conversions were made for "economical Target Shooting" with a .22 Long Rifle using a regular receiver of the Colt Government Model .45 Colt Automatic Pistol". Colt advertised these as a conversion that takes "only a few minutes". Here and now is an opportunity to acquire a scarce but functional piece of American history. The American Colt that takes its rightful place amongst the greatest firearms ever made.
This Conversion is closer to 95% but has a few scratches. Per blue book of gun values the value is increased by 30% with box and instructions included. It is stunning and the barrel is bright. This set appears to have been well cared for, has no rust, pitting, and retains the original box and instructions.
This unit does not contain the bushing or the recoil spring guide. Your Service Model 45 bushing and recoil spring guide fit. Ejector has been replaced.
