Description:
Savage Revolving Firearms Company Navy Model 1861 .36 Cal. SA Percussion Black Powder Revolver c.1861-1862
Designed in 1860 by Henry S. North and Edward Savage, production began in Middletown, Connecticut in 1861 and ended in 1862 with a total of 20,000 units produced. An initial order of 5,500 units was placed in 1861 but was later extended to 12,000 units. The first units were delivered late 1861. The remaining units were sold to civilians and several ended up being used by the Confederates.

The Savage 1861 Navy is quite unique in appearance and is only comparable to its predecessor, the Savage 1859 Figure Eight. Both guns are recognized by its use of a kind of "proto double-action" with a second trigger underneath the first. When this trigger is pulled it rotates the cylinder and cocks the hammer.

Condition is obviously well used. This gun surfaced in Mesquite Texas. Cylinder advances when you pull the bottom lever. Trigger falls when you pull it but not super strong. Do not know if this revolver had a two cock position. This holds and falls in the lower cocked position. Grips are obviously well used and worn. The loading lever screw is missing and replaced with a super old wood dowel. Loading lever is secure with that possible period field expedient fix. A couple of the percussion nipples are mashed. See pictures. Makers marks are good. Very reasonably priced rare 1861 Savage Navy revolver that someone used a lo! Early precursor of the double action. Very interesting pice of Civil War history at a very fair price. Add shipping. No FFL required for transfer.
