John Guest is primarily made pistols during his career and is best known for his US military contracts of Model 1808 in the early days of the Republic, in business with Drepert, Peter Brong, and Abraham Henry. The contract was obtained through Tench Coxe (he is an interesting character), who held the title “Purveyor of Public Supplies” under President Thomas Jefferson. John’s signature is frequently seen as either “J. Guest” or “I. Guest” as these were relatively interchangeable during this period and it is generally agreed upon that this was the same person. Gluckman & Satterlee write that he worked in the Warwick Iron Works, which made cannons during the American Revolutionary War. The overall condition is fair. The action has good mainspring tension and it holds full-cock, but the trigger does not drop the hammer. The cock must be tipped back with the trigger pressed to release it. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock appears to us to be an old replacement. The grip has two stable cracks as does directly under the barrel in the ramrod channel. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 5-3/4 inches. Caliber: .38 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
