Description:
Serial #693884, .38 S&W (.38/200), 4" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of minor freckling within the grooves. This is a commercial blue-finished, no prefix revolver that has matching numbers on the frame, barrel, cylinder, yoke, and extractor. The metal retains about 60-70% of the original blue finish, with most of the loss occurring on the barrel and forward portions of the frame and cylinder through holster wear. The barrel itself has a predominantly pewter gray patina with further fading and silvering along the edges and projections of the frame, as well as a bright turn-ring on the rear of the cylinder. Original muted color case-hardening is still visible on the hammer and trigger, with some further plum-brown freckling on the sides of the hammer spur. South African property markings are present on the rear of the frame knuckle: "U (Broad Arrow) / 2785." The checkered, diamond-center S&W grips are not original and are numbered to another gun on the interior. The wood has some minor handling marks and blemishes scattered about both panels, as well as some flattening of the points. The lock-up is still tight, and the action is fully functional, however the cylinder release does stick from time to time. The revolver is accompanied by a Jay-Pee black leather duty style holster in very good condition. This is a very good example of an early war British Service revolver with rare South African markings. FFL or C&R
