One revolution of the lever operating the screw breech openes access to the breech allowing a .65 caliber ball followed by a black powder charge. After closing the screw breech mechanism there was enough powder remaining on the screw to tip into the pan for priming. The frizzen was flipped closed, the rifle cocked and was ready to fire. This revolutionary design (pun intended) allowed 6-7 shots per minute almost twice as many as the standard flintlock musket…plus its rifled barrel made it more accurate. The breech loading feature also allowed the user to re-load in a prone position. Unfortunately for the British, Ferguson was killed at the Battle of King’s mountain and the 100 or so men armed with his rifle were killed or captured. For more information about Lt. Col.
