The Colt Viper was only manufactured for one year (1977), and was an aluminum-framed version of the post-1972 Colt Police Positive Special. In recent years, owing to its limited production run, the Colt Viper is now considered quite collectible. The viper did not sell as well as Colt had expected and was discontinued. Original Colt Vipers are extremely rare as the discerning collector will know. This makes it one of the rarer Colt revolvers. Since it’s a Colt “snake gun”, it’s also hunted by collectors seeking to acquire one of each of the Colt revolvers named after snakes. Other than being made in blue or nickel there were no Viper variations.
Similar to their Police Positive model, the Colt Viper was a double action revolver in .38 Special with a 4-inch barrel. Made with an alloy frame, it weighed 20 ounces empty. Left side of the frame marked with a Rampant Colt logo. Single line Colt Hartford address marked on the right side of the barrel. Blue finish with 6 shot fluted cylinder. Checkered walnut grips. Comes in original Colt cardboard box. The Colt Viper was a variation of the Colt Cobra produced with a 4″ barrel and in .38 Special caliber. Produced in 1977 which makes this a rarity among the Colt Snakes.
Between 1950 and 2003, Colt delivered to wheel gun aficionados a series of seven now-classic “snake” guns: Cobra, Python, Diamondback, Viper, BOA, King Cobra, and Anaconda. Some of these were more popular and widespread, such as the Diamondback which was made in both .22LR and .38 Special, while some were less frequently encountered, such as the Anaconda which was made in .44 Mag and .45 Colt. For seekers of the seven serpents, however, a couple of these guns are almost impossible to find: the Viper, which was just a regular catalog item for Colt in 1977, and the BOA, which is even rarer.
In fact, for many Colt fans, it is kind of a holy grail.
