Description:
Baker C Grade
The Baker “C” Grade came out in 1895 and was sold under several names:  New Era; Batavia Hammerless; and Imperial. It looks very much like a Syracuse arms gun which was designed by Frank Hollenbeck. I believe that Baker Gun & Forging forged the Syracuse actions and that he used them during his tenure at Baker.
This gun is offered as a collector only as the safety is locked in the on position. Otherwise, it is in pretty good shape. The identifying feature is the cocking mechanism and other mechanical features. It is all completely original, free of rust and corrosion, has clean metal, including a excellent Damascus pattern on the barrels. Bores are very good and was originally guaranteed for nitro powder.
The action body on this gun looks like Syracuse Arms. But the mechanism is different. It is marked” Imperial” on the rib. Mechanically, it differs slightly from the Baker Standard. The floorplate is marked “Patented Aug. 18, 1884”.
According to Daryl Halquist the “engraved [etched] gun with the1884 patent date was called their C Grade.  The patent really is for something obscure in the gun, but I cannot remember what part. The C Grade originally came out in 1895 for marketing in Montgomery Wards.  A few years later it appeared with a Batavia name and was sold directly by Baker.  The Standard was produced years later.  I often wondered if Baker had a bunch of C Grade forgings left over and they just made a slightly different gun for sale for a couple of years.  The C Grade was called the Batavia Hammerless and New Era at times.“ This must be a pretty rare gun. It is the only one I have seen in 55 years collecting American doublebarrel guns.

If you buy this gun you can have the Baker Standerd (GI# 102776109) at half price.
