Description:
This 16 ga hammer gun is in very good condition. It appears to have been shot very little and retains over 90% of the original finish. The action has drifted to brown. The 30 inch fine Twist barrels retain excellent original pattern and the bores are perfect. It locks up tight as new with the top lever right of center.  Varnish on the wood is good and free of dents except for some marks behind the left lock plate. The only other faults are the tip is broken of the HRBP and the head of the left hammer screw is broken. None of which affects the functionality of this nice old gun. This model is very scarce.

William H Baker was one of America’s most ingenious gun designers and entrepreneurs. His trail of companies: W. H. Baker, Lile, NY; W. H.  Baker & Co., Syracuse NY; Ithaca Gun Co., Ithaca NY; and finally, in 1884 what became  “The Baker Gun & Forging Co.”
His brother, Ellis Baker, had formed the Syracuse Forging Company to forge wagon wheel components and all manner parts used for different types of manufacturing.  In 1883 W H joined him in the business, and the name was changed to Syracuse Gun & Forging Company.  The production of a shotgun designed by A.C. McFarland called "New Baker” was placed in production.
A fire destroyed the Syracuse factory in 1888 and the Baker brothers moved their operations to Batavia, New York. WH was suffering with tuberculosis and died in 1889. The name of the company was changed to Baker Gun & Forging Co. with Frank Hollenbeck as superintendent.  Production remained at the Batavia, New York facility until 1919, when its gun manufacturing portion was sold to H&D Folsom.
