Description: Fine Possible CW ID’D Classic Sharps Cartridge Conversion Breechloading Carbine Offered here for sale and just acquired from a prestigious collection of Civil War arms is this classic American firearm from the Civil War period – the Sharps carbine. This specimen, serial number 75766 started out as an original Civil War issue .52 caliber percussion saddle ring carbine-on of many which made their entry into Civil War service, mostly in the cavalry during that conflict. The first issue Sharps came in the long rifle form, followed by the more useful carbines. According to McCauley’s Carbines of the Civil War, this specimen was part of the government contract issued most during the Civil War with over 80,000 specimens manufactured. Naturally most were used by the cavalry-hence the saddle ring attachment. The Springfield Research Service offers assistance in the way of records of issuance to specific cavalry regiments and on rare occasion to the actual cavalryman to whom it was issued. This carbine only bears light but the type of wear consistent with issuance and use in the war and is in fine condition. At the end of the Civil War many of these arms were converted to metallic cartridge- this one we believe converted to .50-70 with 3-groove rifling. The 22” barrel retains much of its original blued finish mixing with a grey-brown patina. The receiver has flashes of original case colors but mostly a grey patina. However the buttstock retains all of its very sharp inspector’s cartouches. The bore is excellent. Overall this is a very fine representative weapon of the Civil War which is truly collectible however can be an excellent reenactor’s weapon. An historical Civil War weapon which would grace any collection of Civil War arms . NO RESERVE ! PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF our ONLINE S ARE HELD WITHOUT RESERVE.
