Description:
VERY EARLY PRODUCTION 1894 TAKEDOWN, .38-55 ROUND BARREL FULL MAG RIFLE WITH SLING EYES, BRITISH PROOFED, #90XX, MADE 1895. This is an interesting rifle as it was fitted with fancier than standard walnut which was fairly typical of special order rifles like takedowns etc. The sling eyes appear to be factory original as the front swivel is correctly in the forene cap and the rear one is positioned correctly. The right side of the barrel has a line of British proofs and markings with one small proof mark on the forward portion of the receiver. The receiver is mostly gray with some light blue on the loading gate and generally fine screw heads. Barrel and mag tube are an aged and uncleaned gray/brown with buckhorn rear sight and small blade front sight. Wood has a smooth feel to it so I assume it was lightly gone over, but not sanded (probably steel wooled lightly). Wood to metal fit is good. Action is tight as is the takedown, half-cock holds securely and the bore is surprisingly fine+ with sharp rifling and only some very minor scattered spots of pitting- usually these early rifles have typically corroded black powder bores. Lots of history in this one. No telling were it may have been- India or Africa probably. Hard to find an earlier takedown 1894.
