Up for sale is a French MAS MLE 44 semi-auto rifle made in 1945. The MAS 44, France's first mass-produced self-loading rifle, had a limited production run of approximately 7,000 units. It was based on the prototype MAS MLE 1940, of which only around 50 were manufactured. The MAS 44 featured an upgrade with a 10-round magazine. Although initial plans called for monthly production of 20,000 units, production halted after the end of the war, resulting in the MAS MLE 44 becoming exceptionally scarce.
These rifles, with their limited availability, saw service with the Marine Commandos in Indochina starting in 1946, where they earned a reputation for reliability. Additionally, an updated version known as the MAS MLE 44a remained in use on French warships through the 1980s.
The unit currently available for sale is number-matching and retains approximately 95% of its original parkerized finish, with only light wear on the front sight hood. The stock is in very good condition, displaying minimal handling marks. The bore is in good shape, with light oxidation in the grooves. The MAS MLE 44 operates with a direct gas impingement system and a tilting bolt.
