Winchester Model 1886 antique rifle, serial number 83957, made 1894, in the desirable 45-90 WCF caliber, with special order 28" full octagon barrel 2" longer than standard. Other features are typical - full magazine, steel crescent-shaped rifle butt, plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, solid frame, open sights, blued and case hardened finish.
CONDITION: No original finish remains on the metal - barrel and mag tube are gray with light scattered surface oxidation. Receiver has turned a mottled nickel-silver, common of a rifle exposed to lots of sunlight, which makes the case hardening fade. Action is smooth and the half cock safety functions properly. Correct rear sight and special order Lyman #4 Hunting Front sight. Stocks show wear, nicks and dings expected of an old, used rifle; stocks do not have any splits or cracks, no extra holes, never sanded or refinished, still tight and even with the metal except at the butt plate toe, which has slight loss due to wear. Mag tube is tight with no looseness. Bore is good, consistent rifling with scattered light pitting and a very light ring under the front sight but thankfully no bulge and it still shoots nice groups with no keyholing. I'd say overall the bore is a 6 of 10. Extra long 1886 rifles are hard to come by; wish it had condition, but someone got his money's worth out of it, most likely on a Western Ranch.
