Description: This is an early Colt Lightning Medium Frame Rifle chambered in .44-40. It has a rare configuration, in that the octagon barrel is 20" instead of the typical 26". As a special order from Colt, you could specify any barrel length, tube length, special wood, pistol grip, and the list goes on. This gun has Straight Grain Walnut stocks, Crescent Butt, Rocky Mountain Front sight and Semi-Buckhorn rear. Receiver also has the sliding safety in the front of the trigger guard. Has the early 1883 Barrel Address and 44 CAL marking at the breech. The gun has aged to an even brown color with original blueing evident in protected spots. The Rampant Colt is visible on the left of the receiver. The wood fits the metal well, with no cracks or chips. The checkering is still intact on the forend but worn mostly smooth. The buttstock is in better condition, having typical light dings from years of being used. The bore is about average, with strong rifling, even pitting and no rings or bulges. The action functions perfectly. I have fired this gun on several occasions and it shoots great with black powder reloads. The Lightning series of rifles were designed as a companion arm to identically chambered Single Action Army and Model 1878 Frontier revolvers. Some military and police models were manufactured. Colt was very serious about the Lightning rifles and they were offered with many extra special order features. Anything a customer wanted was available on the Lightning rifles. The Lightning rifle was very popular in foreign markets, giving Colt a worldwide distribution. They were finely made, handsomely designed and very durable, and many Lightning rifles are still being used today.
