After the underwhelming performance of the .38 Long Colt chambered M1892 revolver in the Philippine theater of the Spanish-American War, the Army, Navy, and USMC sought a sidearm with greater stopping power capable of reliable performance against even the most determined of adversaries. Enter the Colt New Service chambered in the well-regarded .45 Colt cartridge and variously adopted as the Model 1909 U.S. Army, Model 1909 U.S. Navy, and USMC Model 1909. Sources disagree on whether the Navy purchased 1000 or 1100 such revolvers. This example cycles smoothly, locks up tight, and still wears ~75% of its original finish. The lanyard ring has been removed, and the original grips replaced with period commercial hard rubber examples, though all numbered components are matching. .45 Colt
