Description:
Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle, caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40. Early 2nd Model having the thumb print dust cover, dust cover rail held on by screws, and external trigger pin. Typical standard rifle with 24" round barrel, full magazine, rifle butt with trap door butt plate (cleaning rods absent), plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, correct early German silver blade front sight without the set screw, and correct early short rear sight with the checkering on the edges of the ears. Serial number 37009. This will letter as is with the records on hand at the Cody Museum. Original blued finish has drifted to a smooth, even patina. Traces of original case colors exist on the hammer and lever. Dust cover is tight with no wobble. Action also tight with a properly working half cock safety. Bore is very good, a 7 of 10, with just scattered typical black powder oxidation, plenty of consistent rifling, no pits, no bulges, no craters, may clean better. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished, just typical nicks and scuffs expected on a rifle of this age. Barrel has some vise marks at breech, not sure why, barrel is correct and original, has not been replaced or relined. At this time the 44 was the only caliber available for this model, so this piece correctly lacks any caliber marking on the barrel and carrier block. Grades NRA Antique Very Good. Will make a nice addition to any Winchester collection and possibly fill a void as the serial number range for the 2nd Models with thumbprint covers is quite narrow. Sold as a collectible only. Please have a competent gunsmith check it over if you intend to shoot it.
