Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare Massive Market Hunter's 8 Gauge Underlever Single Barrel Breechloading Hammer Shotgun, 8 Ga, mfg. circa 1880's. This piece comes directly from my long time personal collection of choice big bore shotguns and is a great example of a real deal market gun that saw countless years of use along the Eastern shore. Huge shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living harvesting as much waterfowl as possible on a daily basis to supply local markets and hotels. The thick-walled barrel measures an incredible 45 9/16" long and is fitted with a brass bead front sight. The frame and furniture are lightly engraved throughout and have faded to a smooth mottled silver/gray patina. The barrel retains a coat of period dark gray paint which was applied for night gunning. There is some dry old surface pitting scattered along the last half of the barrel from years of handling in wet conditions. There are no markings or proofs aside from several corresponding assembly numbers stamped throughout however the gun is undoubtedly French or Belgium made for the American market. The massive stock features a finely checkered straight wrist fitted with a 6" long steel buttplate. The wood retains a wonderfully untouched dark finish throughout with no cracks, chips, or repairs. Beautiful scrolled triggerguard with 5 3/4" long three-stage barrel tang. Original forward sling swivel with neatly plugged rear sling eye hole. There are two threaded holes on the left side of the breech (one screw present) which may have mounted a stantion for steadying the gun in a boat. The action is crisp and functions flawlessly featuring a rebounding safety and firing pin. Original cartridge extractor functions properly and the barrel locks up tight against the frame like a vault with no play whatsoever. Interestingly it will only chamber French 8 Gauge shells which are slightly smaller than English and American shells. Also the muzzle is very tightly choked for extreme long range accuracy. The bore is relatively bright but shows moderate to heavy spots of pinprick surface pitting scattered throughout. Weight is a hefty 12 lbs 11oz. This is a very unique and titanic shotgun that really makes a statement. A true piece of market gunning history! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
