Description:
NSN, .58 Caliber (approx. 24 Bore), 33 1/4” part round/part octagonal barrel with a good bore that has some dark freckling and pitting along its length. This is a very nicely proportioned gun that has an overall mellow plum-brown patina along the barrel with some mild silvering along the edges of the breech facets and on the “wedding band” transition to round. A further, heavily worn Amsterdam proof marking is present on the top flat, while the rounded lockplate is marked “THONE & ZOON/AMSTERDAM”. The mechanism is not fully functional as both the half-cock and full-cock notches are worn. The European walnut stock has been lightly sanded with an additional varnish finish applied over minor nicks and small handling blemishes as well as a diagonal crack at the first barrel wedge running up to the ramrod tailpipe. The stock is nicely carved, but the forend appears to have been shortened at some point. The brass triggerguard has excellent engraved embellishments, as do the buttplate and sideplate, while the wrist has a large shield-shaped silver escutcheon. The wooden ramrod is a later addition but matches the gun quite nicely. Lambertus Michaelis Thone operated his shop in Amsterdam from 1781-1812. In 1800, his son joined the firm and Thone's guns began to be marked with “& ZOON”, as is present on this example. This is a very good Dutch fowler and would make a great decorative accent piece or addition to any collection of European sporting guns. Antique
