Walther PPK Commercial Made in 1940 .32 ACP
Description: This is a World War 2 built example of the Walther PPK, a 1930’s design made famous by the James Bond character from Ian Fleming’s many spy novels. It was a development of the Walther PP model of 1929. The “PP” stood for “Polizeipistole” or “Police Pistol”. Contrary to popular belief, the “K” in the designation does not stand for the German word “Kurz” or “Short” in English. The “K” actually stands for the German word, “Kriminal”, or literally “Criminal”. Thus the full name of the PPK is “Polizeipistole Kriminal”, referring to the Kriminalamt crime investigation office as the pistol was primarily intended for detectives and other undercover officers. Both the PP and PPK were the first truly successful double action pistols in the world. The example here is the PPK Commercial model of which around 100,000 were produced between 1934 – 1940. Given the condition and year it was made, and despite being a commercial example, it is possible this pistol was used during the war. The grips and pinky extension have warped and cracked with age, and as such are loose – the then available plastic technology was really no more advanced than the rubber used on Colt revolver grips back at the turn of the century. Eventually, they become brittle and break. Fortunately, replacement grips (and pinky extensions) are available and look no different their predecessors, the only difference is that the newer ones will last far longer than the originals. Obviously, much of the original bluing is gone and the surface of the metal exhibits light micro-pitting. Most of the markings are still visible however. The bore exhibits light pitting, but not enough to affect the accuracy of jacketed bullets. The strength of the recoil, hammer, and magazine springs is excellent. The pistol will still function just fine. The de-cocker/safety also works well. It is a pity that the pistol cannot speak, as it would probably have a very interesting story to tell.
