Thompson Center Contender Multi-Barrel Set, 6 Barrels, 10” and 14”
Description: The concept of having one firearm that can be rechambered from one cartridge to another by simply swapping the barrel has always had an allure to it for many sportsman and the Thompson Center Contender certainly has its admirers. Another plus for the Contender is the large number of aftermarket accessories available. These include such things as spare barrels in a variety of lengths and contours, alternative furniture made of different types of wood or synthetic materials, and a large range of scopes and other optics. The example shown here is currently chambered for the venerable .22 Hornet. The .22 Hornet was created by Winchester in 1930 after experiments with .22 caliber cartridges in the 1920’s. Producing the Hornet was a bold move on Winchester’s part, as no guns were yet chambered for it and it was not until 1932 that and firearms manufacturer began production of a rifle chambered for it. Even nearly 100 years later, the .22 Hornet is still in production and a few gun manufacturers still chamber rifles for it. The cartridge sits in a good place in the line-up of .22 caliber cartridges, filling the gap between the .22 Magnum and the .223 Remington. If this does not shoot the owner’s fancy, there are many five other barrels that come with this pistol, each chambered for a different cartridge. Including the .22 Hornet barrel, there are three 10” barrels and three 14” barrels. One of the 10” barrels is chambered for the classic .357 Magnum. A Weaver scope base, rings, and a Tasco Pro Point red dot have been installed. The front sight is retained. The second 10” barrel is chambered for the .41 Remington Magnum. It is equipped with the factory iron sights. The first Super 14 barrel is chambered for the 7-30 Waters cartridge. This is basically the .30-30 Winchester necked down to .284 caliber. The barrel is drilled and tapped for a Weaver base. There is only one dovetail lock in the forward dovetail or slot on the bottom of the barrel. In order to use it with the present wood furniture, the dovetail lock will need to be moved to the rear. The second Super 14 barrel is chambered for the .22 Long Rifle and like the .357 barrel, features a base, rings, and a Tasco Pro Point. The final Super 14 barrel is chambered for the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) cartridge. It is equipped with a Leupold base, rings, and a Tasco 1.25-4x scope. There are of course, many aftermarket options available for the Contender. Such options include the .22 LR, .223 Rem, .22-250, .243 Winchester, .25-06 Rem, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win, .280 Rem, 7mm-08, .30-06 Springfield, 308 Win, .300 Win Mag, .35 Remington, .35 Whelen, .44 Magnum, and even the .45-70 Gov’t. This example is a Generation 1 Contender, meaning the action must be opened to re-cock if the hammer has been pulled back and then lowered. The pistol has seen some amount of use. Most of the barrels exhibit a small sliver of finish loss on each side due to contact with the fore arm. Otherwise, they retain the majority of their bluing. The receiver exhibits 98 percent or better of its finish. The wood furniture has the usual handling wear, with a few dimples on the bottom of the fore arm. The bore or each barrel is in excellent shape with no rust or pitting. Overall, this set would make a great starting point for some looking to get into single-shot pistol or benchrest competitions.
