ELLIOT’S REMINGTON O/U (OVER/UNDER) “DOUBLE DERRINGER” MODEL III THIRD ISSUE IN 41 RIMFIRE CALIBER
Description: ********SOLD******** Description: Because of the barrel address line type, this example is classified as a Third Model, Third Issue, known to be manufactured about 1900-05. Variations of the Fourth Issue would span the years 1906-10. In 1888 the Remington family had sold the company to Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. During 1910-12 Remington Arms Company and Union Metallic Cartridge Company were merged, as Marcellus Hartley had helped to found Union Metallic Cartridge Company in earlier years. Thus, on the later Fourth Models the barrel address reads “REMINGTON ARMS – U.M.C. CO. ILION, N.Y.”. In 1929 some sequential re-designs to beef up the hinge area was initiated to accommodate smokeless ammunition. Serial numbers have been observed among Third Model, Third Issues from 1 into the 1770’s, making this #70 rather early. This number 70 appears both under the barrel (as pictured) and also under the left grip in the toe area. All markings are quite distinct, including the barrel address (also pictured). All aspects of the mechanism function properly, including the vertical cycling of the firing pin. The safety notch on the hammer remains as manufactured, and has not been broken under abuse. The bores of the 3” barrels have strong rifling, with some scattered light pitting as expected. The hinge, so often found cracked on these derringers, remains as manufactured. This 41 rimfire was re-nickeled many years ago, during its period of use, and 98% of that nickel remains intact. The main nickel loss are some small areas near the grips, where some flaking has occurred. However, almost 100% remains on the places where the greatest loss is expected - backstrap, trigger strap, breach end of barrel, and near the muzzle. The black hard rubber grips may be replacements, but are certainly quite nice, with sharp checkering. This gun should be classified as “Antique”, because the 41 rimfire cartridge has not been commercially available. World War II basically ended the production of the 41 rimfire ammunition, and there has been no economic motivation for re-tooling and resumed manufacture of 41 rimfire cartridges. Even if the 41 rimfire manufacture was resumed, the firing of smokeless loads can damage the fragile design of this early derringer. After the war, the manufacture of double derringer copies by such as Great Western (in various modern calibers) has accommodated the market desire to fire such firearms. This Remington Derringer is priced to sell quickly at $395. In some cases, I can ship directly to a C&R licensed individual. Terms: No International sales.
