Beautiful Pair of Scottish Traveling Pistols by Hunter of Edinburgh
Description: NSN, .75 Caliber (10 Bore), 9" swamped, octagon barrels with fine, bright bores that have some faint traces of freckling near the muzzles. These are a formidable pair of pistols, made by Thomas Hunter of Edinburgh, sometime ca. 1785. Both pistols have retained strong twist patterning along the browned "EDINBURGH"-marked barrels, with some thin freckling in spots, as well as some gray fading along the edges of the facets, and bright gold vent liners. The locks are both fully functional, although the sliding safety catch on one of the locks does not move, and both plates are marked "HUNTER". The locks feature waterproof pans, and elegant swan-necked cocks, one of which has an old partial stress crack about halfway along the neck, and one of the hammer screws has been peened in at some point, but seems to be original. The wedge-fastened walnut stocks have checkered grips with rounded, uncapped butts, and have small handling marks and minor blemishes under an old added varnish. Some grain separations and cross-grain cracks are present at the nose of both stocks. The trigger guards have retained some of their original blue finish, with engraved panoplies on the bows, and large pineapple finials; and both pistols are equipped with belt hooks opposite the locks. The pistols were made by Thomas Hunter, who had premises at Canongate Head, Edinburgh, in the late 18th century, and are accompanied by several documents pertaining to Hunter’s business; including a 1997-dated letter from Dr. David Caldwell, Curator at the National Museums of Scotland. Additionally, a small bag of .75 caliber balls is also included. These are handsome Scottish pistols, in fine condition, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
