COLT 1911 WWI BRITISH PROOFED MFG. 1915
Description: British Colt 1911 mfg. 1915 This pistol is one of 200 shipped to London Armory Co. on July 19, 1915, for use by a British officer in WWI. Extremely rare excellent original condition. The British proofs include the London Proof House mark and three crown over V [British commercial proof]- one on barrel, frame and slide. There is no British Army inverted V. The absence of the V indicates this pistol was intended for an officer’s personal use and not part of the general military inventory. This accounts for the excellent original finish you do not find on most 1911 pistols shipped to LAC. As proof of original finish see after bluing Colt VP proof mark on left of trigger guard. It still retains some brightness and red/brown burnish tone. Also note the same red/brown tone of British proofs. According to the Harrison book, pg.151, cal.45 pistols were shipped to England until July 1915. Thereafter, the caliber was the British .455 Webley. There were only 2000 Colt 1911 pistols shipped to LAC prior to July 1915. Thus, this pistol is rare in number, condition and caliber. The top of frame has single letter proofs Y, S, and bottom of E. According to the Clawson book, pg.98, S is said to be that of a Colt temporary inspector through 1916. An E is said to be an indication the pistol was intended for shipment to England. The Y, also appearing on the left of the trigger guard, is said to be that of Colt assembler Ackert. The barrel is bright with strong grooves- 99%. It contains the letter on the left of the tang. The solid wood grips are the proper 15 lines of small diamonds between the large. I need to note that the use of London Amory Co. for shipment of Colt pistols is curious because LAC did not exist after 1866. Authors suggest that gunsmiths from the LAC later formed London Small Arms Co Ltd. which used the name of LAC for these WWI shipments. Beyond the name used in 1915, I find no existence of LAC to track down who used this pistol etc. You will find most of these British pistols in bad exterior condition because when they were shipped back to the U.S. they were simply dumped together into shipping boxes without individual protection which resulted in pistols looking badly scratched.
