GREAT WAR SIDEARM .32 ACP Made Circa 1910

Here we present a C&R Rheinmetall Dreyse Model 1907 Semi-Automatic Pistol, made circa 1910 in Sömmerda, Germany with a production run between 1907 and 1915. The Rheinische Metallwaaren & Maschinenfabrik (RM&M, later known as Rheinmetall) of Sömmerda was an engineering firm founded in 1889 that primarily made field artillery.  In 1901 they purchased Waffenfabrik von Dreyse, a manufacturer of sporting rifles and revolvers which had fallen on hard times. Thereafter, RM&M used the Dreyse name for its small arms production--machine guns and pistols.

The Waffenfabrik von Dreyse was founded around 1841 to manufacture the famous Dreyse Needle gun for the Prussian Army, and they also made needle-pistols and caplock revolvers. The Dreyse Factory went into decline after the German Army adopted the Mauser in 1872. The Dreyse Model 1907 is a semi-automatic pistol designed by Louis Schmeisser. The gun was named after Nikolaus von Dreyse, the designer of the Dreyse Needle Gun.

These were used by the Austrian military during The Great War and were used through World War II by German and Austrian troops. Interestingly, the Pope’s Swiss Guard had these in inventory from initial purchase in 1912 all the way until 1990 when they were replaced!

The overall condition is near fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips are made of horn; the bottom of the left grip is chipped with a short, stable split. The left grip has several thin spots throughout as well due to the material; otherwise solid.

This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
