U.S. Model 1817 Type II Flintlock Conversion to Percussion Pistol
Description: This is a very scarce U.S. Model 1817 single shot pistol. Aside from the Model 1911 semi-automatic pistol, this gun and the Model 1855 pistol carbine are the only pistols ever manufactured at the Springfield Armory. Originaly manufactured in flintlock, it was later upgraded by conversion to percussion. This is a huge pistol with a 10-3/4" .69 Cal barrel with an overall length of 17-1/2". A total of 1000 pistols were manufactured at the Springfield Armory. Production started in 1807 but was halted by 1808 and the semi-finished parts kept in storage. The pistol project was restarted in 1817 and the first Type I used the approximately 400 locks remaining from 1807 production. The 600 balance of produced arms used the already fabricated 1815 dated locks left over from the Model 1803 rifle manufacture. The Type II pistols were completed in 1818 and are dated 1818 at the breech of the barrel with 1815 dated Springfield marked locks. This Type II example is in fine untouched condition with a heavy deeep natural aged brown patina on all the iron parts. The lock is marked behind the hammer Spring over Field over 1815 with a crisp federal eagle in front of the hammer. The barrel has crisp V, P, Eagle proof stamps with 1818 at the rear. The gun was converted with a perciusiion drum and nipple and flat percussion hammer. The mechanics are excellent, smooth clean .69 caliber bore, all original iron mounts and screws and a correct trumpet shaped hickory ramrod having a pinned metal tip threaded for a ball puller. The stock is in excellent condition with a dark natural oil finish with 2 crisp inspector stamps on the plane and initials RC stamped below the butt cap. See Flayderman's Guide #6A-023 with value estimates of VG $4,000 to Fine $7,500 for Type II converted to percusion. This is a very scarce U.S. Springfield martial handgun with only 600 produced and very hard to find. Price: $3,950.00 Buy Now Antique: Yes Handgun Caliber: .69 Contact Seller |
