Scarce Early Japanese Firearm
Here we present an antique Japanese Matchlock “Pistol”. Firearms were brought to Japan in the 1500s in the format you see before you, and were used for about the next 320 years. The firearms were brought by the Portuguese and the Japanese that met them began copying the technology immediately, using their master swordsmiths.
These types of guns are usually ornate, some extremely so. This “pistol” is really a bit big to be classified as a pistol and too small to be a carbine. The size reminds me of a blunderbuss of the type that one would fire without a cheek weld and maybe even from the hip. Japanese matchlocks were used in warfare and were symbols of power then, even as they are now.
The trigger is simply a lever that pushes down on the “hammer” (that is holding a piece of burning wick) to the touch hole.
This piece features a maker’s mark on the lock, as well as three decorative panels on the top of the barrel.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. You won’t come by this every day!
Barrel is round and 14 inches in length. 25 inches overall length.
Caliber: .62
Bore is smooth and in great shape. The firing mechanism is functional.
