WW2 German Mauser 42 Code 1940 P-08 Luger w/ Beautiful Original 1940 Dated Brown Holster
** All-Matching Vet Bring-Back Gun ** SOLD
Description: This is a very nice all-original 1940 dated 42-code Luger made by Mauser in Nazi Germany during WW2. All of the numbered parts are matching on this gun except for the magazine, which is an original WW2 Mauser Luger magazine numbered to another gun. This gun just came on the market from the extended family of the U.S. soldier that brought it home after WW2. These guns were built by Mauser in their Oberndorf factory located on the Neckar river in Germany. They used various codes to hide their pistols' origins from the Allies throughout the war, to prevent targeting of their factories. During 1940 Mauser used the code "42" after dropping the "S" in "S/42" used from 1936 to 1939. The 1940 42-code guns feature a hot salt-blued finish, a rear frame bump, the standard German Army test proof, and "Eagle 655" Waffenamts. The vast majority were fit with checkered wood grips, with about 2% fit with checkered black plastic grips and an even smaller number with Krieghoff-type coarse checkered brown plastic grips. There were approximately 135,700 pistols made in 1940 by Mauser with the 42-code toggle markings. This particular example is serial number 5946 h, and is fit with the standard checkered wood grips which are un-numbered. The original hot salt-blued finish on this Luger is in very good condition, rating 95% plus. The deductions on this pistol come from some minor high-edge wear from being carried in the holster. As you can see from the pictures, this finish wear does not detract much from the clean and attractive look of this Luger. The front and rear grip straps are excellent on this Luger, typically one of the first places that finish wear from use occurs. Given the excellent condition of the original finish on this gun, it has obviously been fired very little and has spent the majority of it's life in the holster that it was captured in. The bore in this Luger is very good overall with a little frosting in the grooves, but with nice strong and sharp lands throughout. As mentioned earlier, all of the numbered parts are matching in this gun including the toggle pin, hold-open, and firing pin, which are three commonly mismatched parts. The grips on this Mauser Luger are in good condition overall, free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. Both grips show only some very minor handling/storage marks that are consistent with the rest of the pistol. The unique toggle-action on this Luger is smooth and slick. It locks into battery perfectly and locks open properly on an empty magazine. All of the controls on this Luger are in perfect working order and it should function just as well today as the day it left the Mauser factory 80 years ago. This 42-Code 1940 dated Luger comes with one original WW2-production metal-bottom magazine in perfect working order. It has an "Eagle 63" Waffenamt on the base which means it was made by Mauser most likely during the last few years of the 1930's. As mentioned before, this P-08 Luger comes complete with it's original holster, a beautiful 1940-dated brown leather holster stamped on the back with the maker & date code of "cdg" over "40", an "WaA101" Waffenamt, and a large "P-08". The code "cdg" was the WW2 German Military Ordnance code for the firm of Auwaerter & Bubeck KG Lederwarenfabrik (Leather Manufacturers) in Stuttgart. The "cdg 40" and large "P-08" stamps are crisp and clear, while the WaA101 Waffenamt is faint but still legible. All of the stitching and hardware is 100% original and intact on this beauty, and the leather is still soft and flexible. This holster is VERY nice, seldom do we see original brown leather 1940 dated holsters, the vast majority were made black or have been dyed black by a German soldier during the war. All in all, this is a very nice original WW2 Mauser Luger rig and would be an excellent addition to any WW2 weapons collection. While this rig did not come with a loading tool or extra magazine, we may have original examples available for an additional cost. This is a C&R eligible pistol.
