1923 Commercial DWM Luger w/ Rare "Safe" & "Loaded" Markings
** All-Original Example of this Rare Variation ** SOLD
Description: Post-WW1 there was a large demand for German Lugers in the United States and elsewhere. This was due in large part to the enormous amount of WW1 veterans returning to their homes that were unable to capture one for themselves while in combat. As a result, the D.W.M. firm manufactured thousands of commercial Lugers and exported them to the United States. Almost all of these Lugers were marked with typical German language "Geladen" and "Gesichert" markings on the safety and extractor/loaded chamber indicator, with only a very small portion of these pistols marked "Safe" and "Loaded" in English. It was actually Stoeger's idea to have the guns stamped in English, and the best estimates are that maybe 2,000 of these Lugers were marked in this way. The Luger advertised here is one of those 2,000 guns and remains in all-original condition right down to the "Germany" stamped wood-bottom magazine. It has a 3 & 7/8ths" inches .30 Luger chambered barrel with a good bore. The rifling is still strong throughout the barrel with sharp lands and slightly frosted grooves. The original factory blue is still very attractive but shows some light wear, handling marks, and some browning patina in places. As you can see from the pictures, this Luger is used but it has obviously been well cared for over the years. All of the factory ctampings are still crisp and clear, and all of the numbered parts are matching. The checkered Walnut grips are in good condition overall, showing the same degree of age and wear as the rest of the gun. Both grip panels are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. All of the controls on this Luger are in perfect working order, and the toggle-action still locks into battery perfectly. We have no doubt that this DWM Commercial Luger would function just as well today as the day it left the factory almost 100 years ago. This rare "Safe" & "Loaded" marked Luger variation would be a great addition to any Luger or general gun collection.
