Scarce 1949 Vintage High Standard Model G.380 Pistol in .380 ACP w/ 4 Magazines
** 100% Original & Attractive Example **
Description: The .380 ACP caliber High Standard G.380 pistol is a very scarce gun, with only about 7000 produced between 1947 and 1950 when it was discontinued. This was the only centerfire pistol ever made by High Standard for the commercial market, and was actually a by-product of the firm's contract with the U.S. Government in 1944 to develop a suppressed centerfire pistol for the U.S. Military's O.S.S. in WW2. High Standard developed a heavy frame based off of the HD model to handle centerfire cartridges and designed it to use a quick-release barrel to allow fitment of a normal barrel or integrally suppressed barrel for clandestine work. High Standard only completed and delivered one pistol to the O.S.S. before World War 2 ended and the U.S. Government cancelled the contract. High Standard was left with a number of fabricated heavy frames and decided to develop a commerical model that used these frames to recoup some of their losses. They tried to develop a 9mm and a .38 Special model on these frames but found that these cartridges were too powerful for a unlocked breech design, so they settled on the .380 ACP cartridge instead. In 1947 High Standard introduced their G.380 Model for commercial sale. It quickly proved to be a commercial failure and did not sell well. Whether this was a result of very little advertising by High Standard, or the fact that it was the only pistol being made in the U.S. chambered in .380 ACP, there is no way to know for sure. The lack of commercial success was not because the pistol did not work, as these pistols are simple in design, reliable, and accurate for a .380 pistol. The G.380 was discontinued in 1950 as the first and last centerfire pistol ever built by High Standard. This particular example is serial number 6578 and was built in 1949. It remains in very good condition inside and out, and is 100% original. The original factory gloss-blue finish is still very bright and attractive, showing only minor wear and handling marks with no bad spots or eyesores. The bore in the 4.75" inch barrel is bright and clean with very sharp rifling throughout. There is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections in the bore whatsoever. The original checkered black plastic grips are in very good condition as well, showing only some minor handling marks and are free from any cracks, chips, or repairs. Both grip panels are tight to the gun with no wiggle. The action on this G.380 is slick and smooth, and it slams into battery with authority. All of the controls on this pistol are in perfect working order, and the trigger breaks nicely with a medium weight pull. This High Standard G.380 should function just as well today as the day it left the factory over 70 years ago. It comes complete with 4 magazines, with the magazines themselves in very good condition and 100% functional. There is one original two-tone factory magazine and 3 solid blued magazines. Out of the 3 solid blue magazines, 2 appear to be factory original and 1 might be aftermarket. All four of the magazines work properly in the gun and feed reliably. If you have been looking for one of these scarce .380 ACP High Standard pistols here is your chance to get one of the best we have ever seen that is 100% original and unmolested.
