High Standard Supermatic Trophy Model 106 Military (mfg 1967) 22LR Hi
Description: The left side of the frame is marked “SUPERMATIC / TROPHY”, with lightning bolts to either side of "TROPHY". The left side of the slide is marked “—HIGH— / STANDARD”. The left of the barrel is marked ".22 LONG RIFLE" and with High Standard's trigger logo. The right side of the frame is marked "MODEL 106 / MILITARY" and “1796997”. The right of the barrel is marked "HIGH STANDARD MFG. CORP. / HAMDEN, CONN. U.S.A.". The top of the slide is marked "1796997". There are two proof marks on the bottom rear of the barrel. 5 1/5"barrel with stab-cuts for mounting a muzzle brake (none included), slab-sided over the frame. The bottom of the barrel has three drilled, tapped, and filled holes for mounting weights (not included). The front sight is a Partridge blade integral to a ramped base screwed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch adjustable for windage and elevation in a base mounted to the rear of the frame. The grips are two-piece checkered walnut with a smooth thumb rest on the left panel (for a right-handed shooter). The front and back straps are stippled. There is a small compression on the left panel and a few dings on the right panel. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine-Excellent condition. This pistol retains about 85% of its metal finish. There is holster wear on the side of the muzzle. There are some scattered minor scuffs, scratches and handling marks, notably on the sides of the slide and along the sides of the barrel. There is some erosion on the trigger. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in about Very Good-Plus condition. High Standard had a long history of manufacturing target pistols going back to before WWII, so they had lots of time to perfect the design. The Supermatic Trophy was the top of High Standard’s target pistol offerings, with the Citation and Tournament models below it. Upgrades over the Citation model include a gold-plated trigger and safety and checkered walnut grips with a prominent thumb rest on the left side. The Trophy models ruled the roost in target competition but by 1964, Smith & Wesson’s Model 41 with its 1911 style grip frame became serious competition. In 1965, the Trophy Military Series 106 pistol was introduced, offered with a thicker non-slanted grip frame ala the 1911. This model was offered with 5 ½” and 7 ¼” barrels. At the same time, the rear sight was changed on the Series 106 Trophy pistols from mounted on the back of the barrel to mounted on a frame mounted bracket over the top of the slide. In both cases, this was to avoid the sight moving with the slide, and on the earlier slant gripped pistols with 8” and 10” long barrels, mounting the rear sight at the back of the barrel still provided a long sight radius, but with the shorter barrels offered on the Trophy Military, this wasn’t possible. This is a 106 Series Military Trophy with a 5 1/2" barrel. All items are also available for sale in our brick & mortar store and are subject to prior sale. Think long, think wrong.
