Description: c1850s BRACE of FRENCH TARGET Pistols by GASTINNE-RENETTE Cased & Engraved .41 Caliber Percussion Matched Set Here we present a Brace of Antique Single Shot Percussion Pistols by Gastinne-Renette of Paris, France circa the 1850s. Henri Renette began gunmaking under his own name circa 1793. Louis Gastinne would join him as a partner in the early 19th Century. Louis’s son, Louis-Julien Gastinne, would marry Josèphine Adèle Renette, the daughter of Henri, in 1834 and begin to make the joined family names truly famous. He proceeded to become the gunmaker to Emperor Napoleon III and his court as well as the king of Spain. The shop would become a destination for aristocrats in 19th Century Paris to purchase fine weaponry as well as to prepare for duels, which were still used to settle matters of offense and honor. These are unique pistols set up with both front and rear sights, with short barrels, and stocks that have right angle grips. While they could have been used to carry for protection, we believe these are short range target pistols, something of a leisure item for an upper middle class enthusiast. The overall condition is good. Original finish and patina. The actions are excellent. The bores are dim and untouched with good rifling. Each of the stocks has a crack at the back near the top of the grip. The interior of the case is in very good condition while there is some loss to the exterior of the case of the fancy veneer. The case contains two led conicals, a powder flask, a wooden cap tin, a bullet mold, a starter and cleaning rod and case key. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
